Unity: My Ass

Yesterday night, Santosh and I boarded the train at Lower Parel. Just as we got in we heard two people arguing. One of them was standing at the door, he looked red eyed, much like a rowdy muslim boy from the street, who’s ready to loose a tooth to show who’s boss. The other guy, who had also just got in the train with us, was a gujju guy, 20 something.

I don’t understand why, but the latter wanted to hang by the door as the former started to abuse the fuck out of him. And then the gujju guy got slapped. Again. And again.

What I fail to understand is that why the fuck didn’t anyone intervene. Nobody said a word. Nobody came to his rescue. People just looked and stared. Some enjoyed. Some laughed. Some were left baffled.

I would have done the same (and I shamefully admit it), had it not been for santosh who looked at me and stood up. I looked back at him and stood up too. Santosh went up to guy who was belting the slaps and told him ‘Bas kar na bhai …bahut ho gaya’…. And I too echoed the claim. We both managed to stop the assault, while the others just watched.

I particularly felt bad for the guy who was being slapped, his face was red…thankfully he wasn’t bleeding. The musilm goonda looked stoned. And to add to it …he wanted to fight. He was already bruised from an earlier fight. And I guess it was his earlier failure that got him to vent it out on this young gujju chap.

What would you have done, if you were a witness to such a crime in broad daylight?
Would you go rescue the guy?
Would you say something?
Would you prove the old saying right: ‘United we stand’?

My Ass!

Once i reached home. i too was feeling very guilty about the whole incident. I thought we shd hav smacked the guy. The incident shows that in Mumbai u r by urself. nobody will come to ur rescue in case of an emergency. The debate is unending. I want to say sorry to the gujju guy that i wasnt able to do much.

Many men have failed to see many a things even with those two weapons. What you see can be a deception.
Anyhow, your answer is purely lame. How do you brand them so specifically by looking at them?? Got anything proper to say?

Didn't we have an elaborate chat on this yesterday?

Santosh. You. Me. G-talk. Remember anything? Or you being having too much of them whiskeys lately?

Neway. To jog your memory...

Muslim guy: Wearing a taveez. Wearing Muslim Cap. Speaking in 'mussu' hindi.

Gujju Guy: Formal Shirt and pant, but have a 'Gujju' accent.

Should i send you a printout so you can remember things or just a bottle of memory pills?

Woah. I'm certain that you had no explanation about the Gujju guy. Anyway, this seems like shite now.
There's no point to it.

First, I'll be technically anal. It should be "lose a tooth" (or even "loosen a tooth" would be grammatically correct but semantically wrong).

Regarding the bigger picture though, I guess I'd step in if I were with someone else. If I were alone, I'd definitely hesitate before doing anything, though I'd look around to see if anyone else might be willing to help me out and then probably intervene.

@phantasmagoria: Happy realisation! And the point i'm trying to make is bigger than who's muslim and who's gujju and who's who. Read the note below.

@Arnold: I'm on the same plane as you. Which is what i meant to say, to begin with.

If i were alone, i'd proably have behaved in the same way. But just that i knew santosh was with me, we gave each other courage.

We'd be watching each others back.

And that's what needs to be changed. Why can't 'other' mumbaikars come to the rescue of this poor chap? He must have been thinking 'Why doens't someone shield me from these morons?' If it weren't for the two of us, surely he'd have gotten more slaps till it'd have been a bloodbath.

And only then will someone intervene? Is that it?
